 |
|
Hello!
It's official: Spring has sprung at yarn-love! We have received lovely, colorful new yarns that are perfect for warmer weather projects, and more yarns will continue to arrive through the month. Read on to learn about what's new and coming soon. We also are planning our upcoming class schedule and share highlights about spring and summer classes; dates will be announced soon. Also in this note is a brand new feature: from friends of yarn-love, which will showcase reviews, ideas, and personal interest stories by the yarn-love family of friends. Many, many thanks to Shelley (shelbell77 in Ravelry) who kicks off this feature with a yarn review.
This weekend is a great time to fall into yarn-love since we have extended hours: First Friday (5-9 pm) and Second Sunday (1-4 pm).
Last, we are so thrilled that our yarn-love community continues to grow. Please join us online in our Ravelry group, yarn-love, to share projects, ideas, and suggestions, and to just chat. (If you are not yet a Ravelry member, it's simple to request an invitation at www.ravelry.com.) And, please join us in-person, by dropping in with a project on a First Friday or Second Sunday.
PS: If your computer doesn't like the links in this newsletter or you want to read previous yarn-love notes, you can access the newsletters anytime on the website.

what's new and coming soon
The focus is on lighter weight yarns, in both gentle and vibrant colors, and in a variety of warm weather fiber blends. Let us tell you what's new by yarn weight categories.
Fingering/sock weight Perfect for socks, wraps, lacy scarves, and baby sweaters.
- Altobish Trill: superwash merino fingering-weight locally hand-dyed by Alice Bish
- Araucania Itata Multy: hand-dyed wool-silk-bamboo blend in sumptuous colorways
- Berroco Sox Metallic: same terrific Sox yarn but now with an added twinkly-star bling
- Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino: new colors and new 'heirloom style' pattern support from Essential Baby and Simply Baby books
- Dream in Color Starry: superfine merino and silver fiber is coming as soon as we can get it! (Pam currently has it on her needles – and is loving it – for the Lace Ribbon Scarf.)
- Fortissima Socka Mexico Kids Colors: new supply of fun colorways
- Sockina Cotton: cotton-nylon-acrylic blend in self-striping colorways
- Step and Trekking XXL: new colorways and patterns
DK weight Perfect for so many projects including wraps, lacy scarves, tops, cardis, and so much more.
- Araucania Ulmo Multy: hand dyed cotton in vivid colorways. (Ulmo Multy begged to be knitted into a Sunday Market Shawl.)
- Ella Rae Bamboo Silk: super soft, smooth bamboo-silk blend with a sheen (Bamboo Silk is looking great as it's being knitted into the Flower Basket Shawl.)
- Noro Silk Garden Lite: wool-silk-mohair blend in the gorgeous colorways we expect from Noro. (This yarn will be featured in two upcoming class projects: Argosy for knitters and Clapochet for crocheters. Samples will soon be on display!)
- Reynolds Soft Linen: super-soft linen-acrylic blend that is so gentle on the fingers! Soft Linen is perfect for tops, tees, and market bags (such as Lion Brand's Green Living Tote). Diane Rizzo is currently knitting up the Yogini bolero by one of her favorite designers, Wendy Bernard.
- Tahki Cotton Classic: new colors of this mercerized cotton
Worsted weight A perfect weight for tees, tops, sweaters, cardigans, hats, and blankets.

(A second Juliet cardi is in progress – this time in a double-stranded Classy Cinnamon Girl. We've got the easy-to-read and friendly-formatted Juliet pattern cards in stock now. This top-down cardi design is a true delight to knit, and is easily customized.)

spring and summer classes
Our goal is to bring you an exciting, full calendar of classes. We're currently very busy coordinating the details of our upcoming class schedule which will span the spring and summer months. You can expect to see the following classes added to our website shortly, but we just couldn’t wait to tell you about them. PS – there will be more classes, too! Look for more details soon at Classes
- Argosy: Join Judi Lentz as she shares tips on reading pattern charts and knit a fabulous modular-looking scarf in either Silk Garden Lite or Hempathy. Judi chose Silk Garden Lite for her Argosy.
- Beginner classes: We will offer several learn-to-knit and -crochet classes
- Chevron Wrap: A one-session class to learn the basics of the chevron stitch pattern AND begin knitting a fabulous three-color wrap in Tahki Maya yarn (arriving next month!)
- Clapochet: Join our favorite Happy Hooker teacher, Veralynne Barry, and make the crocheted scarf-sized version of the super popular Clapotis. Veralynne chose a lighter DK weight Silk Garden Lite for her Clapochet. Don't worry if you're not a happy hooker yet! This class will follow a Crochet Basics class.
- Clapotis: This is THE class for you if you’ve wanted to cast on for Clapotis but felt intimated by the set up and increase sections, and wondered how to knit on the bias. Join Judi Lentz for this one session class and you will be able to cast on for a scarf-sized version of Clapotis (a perfect warm weather accessory!) and get your bias knitting groove on. And, after this class, you’ll be ready to tackle a wrap-sized Clap.
- Fit for Knitting: Let's get down to basics (and our camisoles!) with Alice Bish, who will guide us through taking key measurements that will help ensure proper fit of our completed garments. (And, yes, this class will be scheduled when the shop is closed!)
- Liesl: Let Ruth Thome lead you in knitting this sweet feather and fan cardi, which is perfect for keeping us warm (but not too warm!) in style. Ruth chose Dream in Color Classy in Pansy Golightly for her Liesl.
- Magic Loop Socks: A favorite class here, led by Jeanene Reed. Learn to knit a pair of special socks while learning the magic loop technique, which can be used for other types of in-the-round knitting such as sleeves.
- Monkey Socks: Calling all basic sock knitters who want to dig their needles into the fabulous Monkey pattern. Jeanene will guide you through this lace pattern.
- My Favorite Sweater: A perfect class for first-time garment knitters or knitters who want to perfect their techniques. Let Jeanene Reed guide you in making a super-simple top-down V-neck sweater that fits you. Jeanene chose Knit One Crochet Too's Ty Dy cotton.
- Toe-Up Socks: Calling all sock knitters who want to learn the toe-up technique! Alice Bish will walk you through the process beginning at the tips of your toes.
from friends of yarn-love
We hope you like the premiere guest column – designed to give you opportunity to hear from a fellow friend of yarn-love. We have some ideas for future guest columns, but we would love to hear from you! Let us know if you have something you would like to share in an upcoming love note.
Dream In Color Classy by Shelley, shelbell77
One look at my yarn stash and it's easy to see what my favorite yarn is: Dream In Color. And more than any OTHER yarn in my stash…most of my Dream In Color stash is Classy, their worsted weight yarn. Hands down, my go to yarn. Love their other yarns too, but I have a skein of Classy in just about every colorway the ladies at Dream in Color have dreamt up…and a sweaters worth of a few too. Looking at my projects, I've made 3 adult sweaters, a Tulip Cardigan, Rocketry Cardigan (which is on display at yarn-love), Clapotis, and assorted afghan squares all with Classy (not to mention the many projects I have PLANNED for my stash!). Those who know me have probably listened to all the reasons I find this yarn to be so amazing, but since not ALL of you know me, you haven't all heard my pitch! So here goes... Read entire article |

Make way for spring!
Hello!
I have been saving the January love note so its arrival is timed with the announcement of our super huge blowout getting-ready-for-spring sale. (Hmm... do you think that's descriptive enough?) The sale is a great way for us to make room for spring yarns that will soon be arriving, and it's a fabulous way for you to get great deals on current yarns, accessories, needles, kits, books, and patterns. So mark your calendars now to fall into yarn-love on January 30, 31, and February 1!
There's still lots of time for winter projects, so be sure to come in and stock up now! My latest project is the Ribby-yo Vest in Peruvia Quick (featured in Interweave's Knitscene Winter/Spring issue). This vest is described as the 'go to garment' as we wrap up winter and transition to spring. PS: We have Peruvia Quick on the shelves!
Read on for more information on February classes, and, of course, the Make way for spring sale.

Let Elaine Salvino help you get all stitched up, and you will feel more confident in finishing your knitted projects.
- Short-Row Felted Bucket Bag – Who couldn't use another bag (especially a super cute one)? Join Judi Lentz and learn how short-row shaping will create a colorful and creative striped project bag.
- Totally Tubular Cast On – Are you ready to learn a cast on technique that is loose yet stretchy? Join Ruth Thome at this First Friday in February one-hour workshop and cast on in a way that is perfect for comfortable hats and socks. Make way for spring!
Here's the scoop on the exciting, too-big-for-words sale. Are you already thinking about project possibilities like the Noro Silk Garden striped scarf? Or maybe Hey Teach in a worsted weight yarn? (This sweet cardi is pictured below in a soon-to-arrive spring yarn.) Or maybe a wrap?...How 'bout Clapotis in a fine fingering weight/sock yarn? (And, a 'Clap' makes a manly wrap as pictured below.) And, speaking of sock yarns, what about a pair of Blackrose socks in a spectacular colorway from Claudia Handpainted yarn? (The Ravelry Harrisburg Sock Group is currently knitting Blackrose as a knitalong.) Oh, and don't forget about your favorite winter projects that use chunky or bulky weight yarns; these projects are perfect for Araucania Azapa, Tahki Montana, and Berroco Peruvia Quick yarns.

yarn-love December happenings, volume 4
Hello!
This is the fourth and final weekly love-note in our December birthday month. We are winding down our birthday celebrations. Thanks to everyone who stopped in and made this such a fun month. Read on to learn about 'winter wonder-garland contest,' 'this week at yarn-love' and 'next week at yarn-love' since we have special holiday hours. Also, have you checked out the winter class schedule? Several classes begin 'just around the corner' in January and a few classes are filling up fast!"
I have much to be thankful for during this first year at yarn-love – for family and friends who enthusiastically helped me launch yarn-love and gave their support (tirelessly!) throughout the year. And, I've met so many new friends who have inspired me in so many different ways and have made me laugh and learn.
I wish each of you a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy new year.

this week at yarn-love
Wow! The garland looks wonderful (and quite colorful!) hanging in the window thanks to each talented person who contributed a special, handmade item. The votes have been counted in each of the four categories. All items will be returned to the designers at winter's end.
- Most Colorful: Cathy Steger for her miniature multi-colored sock.
- Most Creative: A tie between Veralynne Barry who crafted a crocheted penguin who is crocheting!, and the mother-daughter team of Diane and Ashley Shayter who made a sleek turquoise felted seal.
- Most Retro: Veralynne Barry (she sure was busy designing garland items!) made a super-cute poncho with fringe that was hanging on a mini clothes hanger.
- Most Winter-y: Diane and Ashley Shayter’s (also very busy designing!) most adorable felted winter white bear with chilly blue trim.

yarn-love December happenings, vol. 3
Hello!
Wow! This month is just flying by. Hope you're doing well and are enjoying the quick pace of December. I had a blast at the yarn-love birthday party this past Sunday. The company (so many of my favorite people dropped in!) and the cake were fabulous. If you weren’t able to stop in, I hope you enjoy the picture of the birthday cake. Linda's Cakery in Mount Joy designed and made this terrific looking and tasting cake. We hated to cut it!

This is the third weekly love-note in our December birthday month. Just like last time, we will fill you in on ‘this week at yarn-love’ and special ‘deep discounts’ that will be offered on Friday and Saturday. In this issue, I’ve also added "next week at yarn-love" since we have special holiday hours.
PS – We haven't run out of our free gifts yet! If you haven't received one yet, stop in!
PS #2 – We still have Sheep Shop One yarn to knit up the super-quick and fabulous Herringbone Neckwarmer. This is a perfect one-skein last minute knitted gift for that special someone on your holiday list. My project is saved in Ravelry as "Orange Crush Herringbone Neckwarmer." "The Herringbone Neckwarmer" pattern is a free pattern on loopknits.com.
