Mind the Gap

My in-laws recently left for 2 weeks in England and Scotland. With their departure I got to thinking of British sayings. For an Anglophile like myself, I am sometimes at fault for using British terminology in place of American words. Example: My groceries go in the boot (i.e. trunk). Instead of calling the subway, the subway, Brits refer to it as "the tube". If one enjoys watching British TV or has had the privilege of traveling there, you will know that in the tube stations a lovely little voice reminds passengers to "mind the gap". This refers to the 6-inch space --give or take-- between platform and train car.

So what does this have to do with knitting? Quite a lot actually. For frequent subway travelers the "gap" is unnoticeable. It's not that it has disappeared but rather that they have ceased to pay attention to it. For newbie subway riders or tourists, much attention is given to both the warning and its supposed consequences.

Now take a moment and remember how you felt as a new knitter. Everything was, well, overwhelming. You were eager to tackle a project but your confidence didn't always match your ambition. Often I see newer knitters at yarn-love painstakingly fretting over little things like how to sew a seam, or read a pattern, or fix a mistake. However, these are not little things to them, they are huge obstacles. Even for us "experienced" knitters a new cast on or project we aren't familiar with can bring back memories of these early anxieties. At times even determining if we pursue the project further.

This summer we've compiled several classes that will help any level of knitter gain confidence in refining your mind gaps. Even frequent knitters need to hone their skills; myself included, and occasionally be reminded that gaps and holes in our knitting knowledge exist. Here are a few offerings (some this week!) that we hope will give you more confidence and ease as you pursue your craft.

  • Sock Clinic - Instructor Jeanene Reed - Wednesday, July 28
  • How do I fix it? - Instructor Judi Lentz - Thursday, July 29
  • No More Sloppy Seams - Instructor Elaine Salvino - Saturday, August 7
    • Don't have a sweater ready to seam? Don't worry! Check out the class page for a list of swatches to make to practice seaming. Plus, these make great references when your sweater is ready.
  • Cracking the Knitting Pattern Code - Instructor Judi Lentz - Thursday, August 26

For more details on each class or to sign up, check out our class page or stop by yarn-love!
