Quotes for the Knitter

I'm being self-indulgent in this post. So bear with me. :-) Every fall I carve out time to re-read a book from L. M. Montgomery's beloved work of Anne Shirley. This year I'm listening to Anne of the Island, which tells of Anne's college days. It's a delicious romp for the imagination. While driving home through the thick fog of Sunday morning, this passage was read:

The door opened directly into a large living-room, where by a cheery little fire sat two other ladies, both of whom were also grim and ancient. Except that one looked to the about seventy and the other fifty, there seemed little difference between them. Each had amazingly big, light-blue eyes behind steel-rimmed spectacles; each wore a cap and a gray shawl; each was knitting without haste and without rest; each rocked placidely and looked at the girls without speaking; and just behind each sat a large white china dog, with round green spots all over it, a green nose and green ears.

It made me chuckle. The dogs are funny enough, but combined with the stoic knitterly maids... Well, can't you just picture it? Sometimes I feel like I knit without hast and without rest too! Throughout that particular scene, the elder most maid only ceases to knit once. When Anne and her friend Priscilla find out that the two women are traveling to Europe, they comment later to themselves that--

"I know they'll take their knitting with them everywhere. They simply couldn't be parted from it. They will walk about Westminster Abbey and knit, I feel sure."

I think a few of us can relate to that sentiment or at least our family and friends can!

What are some of your favorite knitting quotes? Please share! I keep a book of quotations in my writing desk and adding knitting quotes is always a highlight.

Special Note: Last week's blog on Left Overs inspired yarn-love friend Barbara to share one of the ways she uses up her yarn scraps--knitting doll clothes! There are patterns available at yarn-love, on Raverly, from Morehouse Farm, and even Ebay! If you don't have a sweet little one to appreciate these treasures, consider dressing a doll in your handknits and giving to a charity like the Ronald McDonald House. Stash busting and service minded, now that sounds like a perfect pair!

Lisa, thanks for that delightful romp! I won't ever read Poe again without thinking of the Romeny Ewe. Thanks for sharing!

Kristen, knowing your love of classic literature, I need to share a Halloween link to Franklin Habit's blog:

You will never look at Edgar Allen Poe, or your knitting, the same again.

Here's my favorite, hands down:

"The yarn forms the stitches, the knitting forges the friendships, the craft links the generations." - Karen Alfke

I just love it because it's so true!

Another one that I just stumbled on in Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next Series that made me giggle (from the third book, The Well of Lost Plots):

"I kicked off my shoes and flopped on the sofa next to Gran, who had fallen asleep over a sock she was knitting. It was already a good twelve feet long because, she said, she had 'yet to build up enough courage to turn the heel.'"
