Last week, we received a large needle order. What was different was the crochet hooks we received. The lovely and talented Katie Bobb arrived shortly after the UPS man. She wanted her hooks. See, Addi has a line of ergonomically correct crochet hooks called the Addi Swing Hook (see attached picture) and Katie had ordered a complete set. We handed over her goodies and she immediately got to work. As I watched how she easily moved the hook in and out grabbing and looping the yarn each time my admiration for her talents grew, and so did my curiosity. I asked her if they worked well-- her reply, "Oh yes! They fit right in your hand so comfortably." These new hooks resemble more of a toothbrush then the traditional all-metal versions I am accustomed to seeing. The handle is wider with cushioned spots for placing your thumb and the hook resembles the metal used for the Addi Turbo needles. My guess is that these hooks would be wonderful for those suffering from arthritis simply because they are larger to hold. Another plus, each size is color coded so no more trying to read a minuscule stamp on the handle! For those interested, yarn-love is stocked in the most common sizes if you'd like to swing in and pick one up.
Crochet design has been on my mind the past few weeks since reading Kate Davies' blog post Craftopolis. In it she mentions an Irish crocheter named Aoibhe Ni. Her designs are entirely crocheted and I have never seen anything like them! Often I think of crochet as great for stuffed animals or little snowflakes or even heavy duty slippers because the fabric tends to be so dense. We have a beloved crocheted afghan at our home and one of the things we love is how heavy it feels when we drape it across our cold legs. It instantly makes you warm because it's not flimsy. However, Aoibhe's crochet makes me ogle. Yes, ogle. I just simply can't take my eyes off how airy, how inviting, and how not my grandmother's crochet they are! If you're on Ravelry, check out her Snapdragon Shawl or her Honeymeade pattern. If your expectation of crochet is similar to mine, you'll be stunned.
In other crochet news, be on the look out for a few new crocheted patterns come to yarn-love from one of our favorite places! Churchmouse Yarns & Teas, recently released several new patterns of which a couple featured crochet. We will be receiving Kelly's Frothy Crocheted Scarf & Wrap and One Big Granny Square Throw along with several of their new knit designs soon.
If you're a crocheter and have a favorite designer, please share! I'm personally really curious as to other "hidden" crochet treasures.
One more thing: A HUGE thank you for all the sharing on the TV/Movie post last week. I definitely have updated my list. I've got 3 days to finish two projects and I think I'll just squeak by. Here's hoping my fingers don't fall off!!
