Hello!

Even though it’s May and feels like spring outside, we’ve been focusing on fall.  Now is the time that we’re busy selecting fall yarns for your knitting and crocheting pleasure.  We’re excited about the beautiful fibers we’re seeing in both vibrant and muted colors.  Seeing, touching (and smelling) all this fabulous snuggly yarn makes me want to knit a warm and wooly sweater now...

However, our looking ahead to fall hasn’t stopped us from bringing you new goodies right now!  This love note serves up what’s new at yarn-love.  Plus, we’ll give you the latest scoop on classes and first Fridays.  Lastly, tucked in for good measure, is this month’s from friends of yarn-love, which is a review of The Book of Yarn by Clara Parks.

what's new

  1. Mini Mochi from Crystal Palace is (finally) here!  This soft-as-a-kitten fingering weight superwash wool is bursting with self-striping colors and is perfect for socks, baby projects (think: Baby Surprise Jacket), and so much more.
  2. Noro Furisode is a chunky weight cotton blend.  Come see our fun sleeveless top sample in the shop.  Also in: bright colorways of Silk Garden Sock which are perfect for our One Row Lace Scarf or Shawl pattern.
  3. Claudia Handpainted Fingering Merino arrived in a batch of hot colors including the new Mi Mi Melon.  This yarn is perfect for socks (of course!) and the Sea Swirl mini capelet (pictured below).
  4. Tahki Nova is a DK weight cotton for those of you who love a little bling.  Stop in to see the summery colors and our Nova Lacy Wrap that was knit using 4 balls of yarn and Tahki’s free pattern.
  5. Cotton Chenille has been replenished with several new colors.  This yarn is perfect for face cloths ( a perfect gift!), and we have two very cute samples in the shop.  Plus, you’ll find a review of this yarn and a pattern in The Book of Yarn.
  6. Kollage Square needles are now out in Straight needles sizes US0-10 (10” long) and DPNs in US4-10 (7” long).
  7. Shawl sticks and swirl ‘buttons’ that are petite and just the right size for lighter weight knits.
  8. Go Knit Pouches in a rainbow of colors make it easy to “take it with you” where you go (or don’t go!) this summer.
  9. yarn-love's parking lot is now expanded.  Come try it out!
  10. Last but definitely not least, our favorite Shopgirl, Lois has officially joined the yarn-love team and we are thrilled!  You can find Lois here most Wednesdays and First Fridays, and other times when she just can’t stay away.  Lois brings a wealth of knitting and fiber knowledge with her, is genuinely interested in your projects and questions, makes it easy for you when selecting yarn or a project, and is just so much fun to be around.

first fridays
Our May First Friday was hopping!  Thanks to everyone who joined us.  We had a great time seeing your latest projects, hosting our local artist Ronnie Janklow Arata (Baubles for You jewelry and stitch markers remain at yarn-love), and just hanging out.  Lucky Lori Lynn Lydell won the bracelet Ronnie donated – just in time for her birthday.  Kathy Hirsch (a most fabulous knitter!) won the ‘Wear the Most Garments’ contest; she selected a lime green Go Knit pouch.

Mark your calendar now for June First Friday:  June 5 until 9 pm.  Here’s what’s we have lined up for you so far.  We will share additional details soon.
  • EarthSong – Doris Slade is a glass and ceramic artist, as well as a knitter, who celebrates her love of nature and fibers by creating exclusive one-of-a-kind glass buttons and pendants using an imploded flower technique on the torch.  (If you can’t wait until First Friday, yarn-love currently has a sampling of Doris’s beautiful buttons.)
  • JK Jewelry:   Judy & Katie (the JK of JKjewelry) offer a line of stunning sterling-silver chainmaille bracelets and unique dichroic glass pendants.  Here, JK will unveil their summer-y chainmaille necklaces made of lightweight and colorful anodized aluminum with sterling silver accents and closures.  There will be show specials and a drawing for a one-of-a-kind pendant drawing.
  • yarn-love crush:  Although we can’t reveal the surprise sale just yet, we can share that we’ll turn the spotlight on a lightweight spring yarn or two.
  • Treats:  We’ll have more of those tasty cookies

Have any of these questions ever crossed your mind:
  • I wonder how yarn is made?
  • What is the difference between single ply and double ply?
  • Can I substitute bamboo yarn for silk yarn in this pattern?
  • Does angora yarn come from an angora rabbit or an angora goat?

The Maine Morning Mitts pattern is included in the book.  The Mitts are modeled here by Kristin's husband, David.
