The Knitter's Book of Yarn

A review by Kristin Runyon (ravelry: kristinnoel)

Have any of these questions ever crossed your mind:

  • I wonder how yarn is made?
  • What is the difference between single ply and double ply?
  • Can I substitute bamboo yarn for silk yarn in this pattern?
  • Does angora yarn come from an angora rabbit or an angora goat?

Clara Parkes' The Knitter's Book of Yarn: the ultimate guide to choosing, using, and enjoying yarn is a resource guide every yarn enthusiast should have. Broken down into three sections Parkes clearly and concisely explains from where yarn comes, how it is milled, and how plying effects the finished project. Sprinkled through the book are stories behind various yarns, a listing of fiber festivals around the country (do I hear road trip?), and yarnie fun facts. Additionally, 40 patterns formatted to help you see and use the knowledge explained in the book are included. They range from small tea cozy and sock patterns to lacey wraps and shaped cardigans.

You can easily sit down and peruse a small section to increase your yarn knowledge, or hunker down for a fascinating read on the ins and outs of yarn. Learning about the structure of yarn and how various fibers are harvested and spun increased my appreciation for this medium. For those "I can't remember how to..." moments, the back of the book is an entire resource unto itself including: how to care for yarns, instructions for figuring out that mystery yarn fiber, abbreviations, and a recommended reading list.

Writing from her vast knowledge of all things yarn, Clara Parkes, founder of Knitter's Review, extends her weekly yarn profiles in this book. Whether you knit or crochet you will find this book to be helpful, thorough, and intriguing.

My darling hubby gave me this book for Christmas. Shortly thereafter, I knit him a pair of the Maine Morning Fingerless Mitts. He loves them while I have a much deeper understanding about the make-up of yarn, and why I always need more.
