Dream In Color
Fingering weight yarn review by shelbell77
It has been a while since I have talked Dream In Color with all my yarn-love friends! It’s been heavily on my mind lately as I continue to learn the versatility of the yarn. Today's review focuses on the fingering weight Dream In Color yarns: Smooshy, Starry, and the new Knitosphy. All three yarns are a nice fingering weight, machine wash and dry, and have 450 yards to a skein. Moreover, all three feature fabulous color options. Dream In Color’s use of color, combined with the easy care is what has kept this my favorite yarn company for over two years now.
My latest favorite thing to do with Smooshy is the Elizabeth Zimmerman Baby Surprise Jacket (note: yarn-love has a Baby Surprise Jacket class scheduled and also stocks this pattern) with a matching pair of Saartje’s Booties (note: free pattern on Ravelry). The construction of the Baby Surprise Jacket helps highlight the subtle color variances in the Smooshy, and of course, the easy care of the Smooshy is great for the new mothers in your life. The little matching Saartje’s booties are a fun addition to the package and help make an adorable coming home outfit for any new baby.
Those of you who follow me on Ravelry may have seen the Milkweed Shawl (note: pattern is available for download fee on Ravelry) I made out of Starry, plus my Hedera socks (note: Cookie A pattern is free on Ravelry). Starry is the same yarn and colorway options as Smooshy, but with a HINT of sparkle to it thanks to a little silver thread. Now, my friends can tell you, I’m NOT into flashy clothes or novelty yarns, but the sparkle in the Starry is subtle and GORGEOUS. I got tons of compliments on my Shawl when I wore it at my best friends wedding. And every time someone looks at my Hedera socks a quick smile flashes across their face as they see the sparkles and how pretty they are.
Now, on to Dream in Color’s newest fingering weight, Knitosophy. Unlike the veil-dyed Smooshy and Starry, Knitosophy is flash-dyed. The veil-dyed Smooshy and Starry would fall more towards a semi-sold color than a variegated. There are very subtle and delicate color variations that give these yarns amazing depth. With Knitosophy, there are much wider color variations – but personally, I don’t really think of it as a variegated yarn. As subtle and random as the color changes are in the Smooshy and Starry, the same is true with the Knitosophy – it's just that they are actual changes from one color to another rather than changes within a color. My most recent finished pair of socks is the Lacy Rib socks by Wendy Johnson and they are DELIGHTFUL in Knitosophy. (Lacy Ribs socks pattern is included in Wendy Johnson's book: 'Socks from the Toe Up', which yarn-love stocks.) Super comfy, fit great, and like my Hedera socks, look brand new each time I pull them out of the wash. |
